The Richest Black Man King Mansa Musa 1st

Image
A forgotten king who once ruled West Africa in the 14th century is named the richest person in history following a new inflation-adjusted list of the world's 25 wealthiest people. Spanning 1,000 years and with a combined fortune of $4.317trillion, only three of the list's 25 are alive today. Mansa Musa obtained his wealth from his country's production of more than half the world's supply of salt and gold which contributed to his wealth, which he used to build large mosques that still stand today. As per the writings of an Arab-Egyptian scholar- Al-Umari, Musa inherited his throne through an appointment after the king went on his pilgrimage to Mecca. one of the Mosques built in the 13th century still present today  Musa's world record net worth was diminished after his heirs were not able to Read more on http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2218025/Meet-14th-Century-African-king-richest-man-world-time-adjusted-inflation.html sources atlantablackstar.co...

Is it Okay to Scratch Your Hair in Public?

Image
Just opened my window curtains to see how the weather would look like...hihihihi. This came quite instinctively because I once lived with a grandma who looked at the clouds each morning to forecast the weather before she headed to the farm. Here I am in Britain instead of just checking out the weather forecast, I opened the curtains only to be put off my the moist air trapped on the window(condensed air). I could not see through the condensed window and only then did I think of the weather forecast. I can see the blue clouds which is an indication of sunrise; it is my perecption that it will be bright for the most part of the morning. I'm happy with that personal weather deduction. Now, to the main topic. I watched a video on you-tube in which the novelist Chimamanda Ngozie was being interviewed on Beauty Does Not Solve the Problem.  I was listening as part of my morning distractions and after a few minutes she scratched her hair on camera. Should we really be concerned about...

The Importance of Praising People

I'm seated here thinking about the first day after some weeks when I took my little girl to the saloon to tidy up my hair. I needed to give my hair a lift as it was quite messy. Whenever I return from the hospital I always need a make-over. Seated in a saloon with the baby all wrapped in my hands, a Yoruba woman walked up the stairs and was being shown respect by all the Yoruba women in the saloon. They were all bowing to show their respect as she seated. "Welcome ma" they said, each person taking a turn. My head was thinking; this woman must be something else, the jewelries she wore, the dress, I could not take my eyes off her. There was something that attracted me to her, just maybe, I was wondering what eldely woman could afford to dress this gorgeously and still catch my interest with style and class. Then the hairdresser patted me on the back "that's our pastor's mom oh" Oh I see, came my response. How could it escape my mind where all that holy and...

Keeping Friends or Letting Go!

Image
Today, I am going to write about friendship. When I think of the word, friendship, I think share, love, understanding, close association, unity, harmony, laughter, peace, and much more. Coincidentally, some of my thoughts resonate with the meaning of friendship as defined by the dictionary. It would seem the meaning of friendship changes as I grow older and I want to think I now understand more. Friendship during my nursery and primary, and secondary school days was mainly constitutive of sharing our lunch contents especially during school breaks when we would each share what we brought from home. This aspect of sharing could be heartbreaking particularly in times when one was not in position to share either because it was too nice or because there was nothing to share. Some friendship became compromised because some pupils always brought goodies to school, but others struggled to come with a pack. Friendship was solidified for those who always shared and was jeopardised when pupils ...

Being a Mom

So someday, you too are going to be a mom. Absolutely nothing in this world will prepare you for it. But I want you to note most saliently, that the little beauty in having a child, is for you to be there each time he/she calls. In my view, being a mother is empowering as I respond to the needs of the little one who is pristine in nature and sometimes with so much affection, but sometimes, things seem overwhelming. I recall my first encounters: I would tuck the little one in  and doze off too and it would feel like the greatest accomplishment, but just after a few minutes the little one would be up again scratching the beddings and making baby noises and I would question within me, "chai, this pikin now now so you sleep?" and with heavy eyes, I'd still wake up, find a spot and cuddle the baby into my arms. Once in my arms, the baby would rub its mouth against my chest looking for food. And at what time? Midnight! Here I am missing those moments with the knowledge that I ...

Kids on Reason

Image
Does reason come natural to everyone or is it learned? There are certain human behaviours that are to me, instinctive such as breastfeeding. You don't have to teach a baby to latch on. Miracle! But much of what sustains a successful life takes practice, discipline, resilience and most crucially, reason. Some take greater time to reason, and others take little time. Some emerge extensively successful and others just struggle. I have many of my friends who frequently use the adage; "we have come to escort others" to live a beautiful life. But then again, what constitutes success, and a beautiful life is hyper nuanced. It would be parochial of me to think everyone should live the same way even if they were on the same plane. Having said that, I believe it is salient to understand that one of the basic components of success is reason. One of the key ways to become reasonable, is to gain mastery of the language in which you communicate. When your child has a broad use of vocab...

On the Subject of Coaching Children

Image
I feel like I should over-emphasize the point made on my previous article "Yay or Nay to Mentoring Children?" I thought about it, and reached the conclusion of Yay. And here's why. Growing up in Cameroon, I watched hens mothering their children in a manner that indicates the mentoring technique I intend to capture. To mentor a child, in its simplest form, is to teach them how to fend for themselves. Even though I see education as the direct route through which many have tended to provide for themselves and families, I also think there exist several other indirect paths. Unfortunately in Cameroon, many of these paths are thought of as low-income jobs, meant for those with little intellectual capacity. Contrary to the view, I have observed that it is the means through which many in the West sustain their lives. Examples such as sewing, hair-braiding, driving, and crocheting are usually perceived as a no go area for many parents in Cameroon. But in Britain, it is a life skil...

Mentoring Children Yayy or Nay?

Image
At some point in my life was instilled me the desire to see nothing valuable; not to make any efforts towards anything. For those of you who know me too well, giving-up has never been my option. I might take a break because I am consumed by other priorities, but I don’t leave it. In my life, and not unique to me, I have faced several life challenges. In those moments of despair, I would wish so much that my grand-mother was alive for me to go live in her hut and do nothing but join her in the farm and sing all day, while she did most of the work. That life was in my view, a stress free life. Grandma’s life was pretty basic. She did not need much and her greatest joy was to see the seeds she sowed produce bounties. She enjoyed sharing whatever she harvested and selling some to gain some financial remuneration which she used to purchase basic needs. I thought the life was stress free, but it wasn’t. She did stain as she tilled the soil, planted seeds, nurtured them and also harvested. N...
