And on Mother's day, I find this Incredible Pair on the Coveteur!!!

Image
the Coveteur       So someday, you too are going to be a mom. Absolutely nothing in this world will prepare you for it. But I want you to note most saliently, that the little beauty in having a child, is for you to be there each time he/she calls. In my view, being a mother is empowering as I respond to the needs of the little one who is pristine in nature and sometimes with so much affection, but sometimes, things seem overwhelming. I recall my first encounters: I would tuck the little one in ... and doze off too and it would feel like the greatest accomplishment, but just after a few minutes the little one would be up again scratching the beddings and making baby noises and I would question within me, "chai, this pikin now now so you sleep?" and with heavy eyes, I'd still wake up, find a spot and cuddle the baby into my arms. Once in my arms, the baby would rub its mouth against my chest looking for food. And at what time? Midnight! Here I am missing those mo

Women Charge for Top Political Positions Around the Globe

Image
I followed the recent UK elections that took place on Thursday the 7th of June, and it seems to me there is a global wave of women charging for political positions. From Nicolas Sturgeon leader of the Scottish National Party and in whose party a 20 year old girl was voted MP just goes to confirm my thought on how both women and girls are hungry to take charge of issues of national interest. Although I acknowledge that this number is quite small compared to the number of men in similar spheres, it is an increase compared to previous times. Others are Natalie Bennett-leader of the Green Party, and Leanne Wood-leader of Plaid Cymru which shows the number of women who have now taken lead in the public sphere. I believe it is a way forward for women who have most often been relegated when it comes to issues and debates on political matters. In other parts of the world like in Africa, Pres. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf leads Liberia which in a way demonstrates that all is not gloom and doom for w

The Burden Immigrants Bear Sending Money to Relatives-Emmanuel Adebayor Opens Up!!

"I have kept these stories for a long time but I think today it is worth sharing some of them with you. It's true that family matters should be solved internally and not in public but I am doing this so that hopefully all families can learn from what happened in mine. Also keep in mind that none of this is about money. At the age of 17, with my first wages as a footballer, I built a house for my family and made sure they are safe. As you all know, I have received the trophy of African Player of the Year in 2008. I also brought my mother on stage with me to thank her for everything. In that same year, I brought her to London for various medical check ups. When my daughter was born, we contacted my mum to inform her but she immediately hung up the phone and didn't wanna know hear about it. Reading your recent comments, some people said my family and I should consult T.B Joshua. In 2013, I gave my mother money so she could consult him in Nigeria. She was supposed to stay fo

Ever Wondered the Role of Women in Pre-Colonial Cameroon?

Image
It is a long week-end and I am excited as I browse the internet to find out the place of women in precolonial Africa, specifically Cameroon. The reason being that I read a few articles which underscore the colonial role in re-shaping the status of women within African societies. Some of the articles argue that colonialism possibly reconfigured gender roles relegating women to the domestic sphere while men were given the opportunities to integrate into the restructured societies established by colonialists. The historical accounts hold that during the pre-colonial periods, women assisted in agriculture something which they still do till present, particularly in countries like Cameroon. According to some researchers like Goheen (1996) and Nana-Fabu (2001),  an estimated 90% of the food crops in Cameroon are cultivated by women. The implication is that women are very productive in sustaining the livelihood of the people. Before I run the risk of diverging too much, my focus is to d
