Women Charge for Top Political Positions Around the Globe
I followed the recent UK elections that took place on Thursday the 7th of June, and it seems to me there is a global wave of women charging for political positions. From Nicolas Sturgeon leader of the Scottish National Party and in whose party a 20 year old girl was voted MP just goes to confirm my thought on how both women and girls are hungry to take charge of issues of national interest. Although I acknowledge that this number is quite small compared to the number of men in similar spheres, it is an increase compared to previous times. Others are Natalie Bennett-leader of the Green Party, and Leanne Wood-leader of Plaid Cymru which shows the number of women who have now taken lead in the public sphere. I believe it is a way forward for women who have most often been relegated when it comes to issues and debates on political matters.
In other parts of the world like in Africa, Pres. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf leads Liberia which in a way demonstrates that all is not gloom and doom for women in Africa particularly within sedimented patriarchal societies. I strongly believe that women will emerge in Cameroon given the recent presidential elections which took place with Dr. Kah Walla-a woman who believes she can contribute to the growth of the nation without adhering to claims that women cannot take up leadership roles. In the US Hilary Clinton is on for women. Other examples around the world include: Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, in Argentina, we find pres. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner just to name a few. I think women should continue pushing until the world finally reaches the point of recognition that women can lead, too. But one important point is that the world watches these women and they are the yardstick to measure whether women can. I think they are not doing any worse!!!
