Keele University is offering five Leverhulme-funded PhD scholarships through its Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) Programme, designed to train the next generation of interdisciplinary rural researchers.
Applications are open for student-proposed PhD projects that address real challenges facing UK rural communities and align with SURF’s research themes and values.

Interviews: 30 April – 1 May 2026
Who Can Apply:
Applicants from a wide range of disciplines including ecology, economics, environmental science, geography, law, politics, psychology, history, sustainability, and more.
Project Requirements:
Proposals should:

Tackle a current challenge in UK rural communities

Be community-led and more-than-human in approach

Align with at least two themes: Landscape, Land Use, Lifestyle, and Livelihood
Applicants should outline their research aims, methods, training needs, and potential impact.
