Advice From a Young Cameroonian Top Achiever To Scholarship Seekers

Last year, Jerry Awah obtained a full intergovernmental scholarship to study at the Power Engineering Institute in Russia through Beveen Mentoring and Scholarship Programme . The scholarship is offered through a partnership between the Cameroonian and the Russian governments. These governmental scholarships offered to brilliant students go a long way to strengthen the bonds between governments and most crucially, send a message to the youths in Cameroon and in other developing countries that the future is bright for brilliant students regardless of gender, class, tribal connections, and status.

I remember last year, when I heard from my neighbour that Jerry had scored 5 A grades at the GCE advance level, I was ecstatic and called him up to introduce myself as a mentor for those seeking scholarships and urged him to find a scholarship. I must have called him a couple of times not to settle for anything little. In my view, he deserved the best not just based on his academic performance, but based on his interest in engineering.

In the end, Jerry obtained a scholarship to study in Russia, and he attests that Russia has a high level of practical equipment to assist students in engineering compared to Cameroon's. He is enjoying his studies in Russia and contrary to views that Russia is hyper racist, it happens to be a very hospitable place for those intending to study there. The main advantage which he thinks is a disadvantage is that he has to spend some months to learn the language. He is almost done with the language course and is set to begin his first year as an undergraduate student in some weeks. I seized the opportunity to ask him a few questions on WhatsApp.

I began by asking Jerry the key strategies in passing the GCE Advance Level with 5 A's.

and true to his word, Jerry, sent us some pictures.
