France Star Condemns Senator's Remarks as Football Unites Against Racism

France captain Kylian Mbappé has strongly condemned racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla following France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup, calling the comments "despicable" and saying they have overshadowed Paraguay's impressive tournament.

The controversy erupted after Amarilla posted offensive comments targeting Mbappé on social media after France advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to the forward's winning penalty. Her remarks were widely condemned as racist by politicians, football authorities and fans around the world.

In a public response, Mbappé defended both himself and the Paraguayan players, making it clear that the senator's statements did not reflect the values shown by Paraguay's team during the tournament. He criticised the comments as incompatible with someone holding public office and reaffirmed that racism has no place in football or society.

The French Football Federation (FFF) announced it will pursue legal action, describing the senator's remarks as criminal, abusive and unacceptable. French President Emmanuel Macron also voiced support for Mbappé, while the Paraguayan government publicly distanced itself from Amarilla's comments, saying they do not represent the country's values.

The incident has reignited the global conversation about racism in football, with players, officials and supporters calling for stronger action against discrimination both inside stadiums and on social media.

For many observers, the episode serves as another reminder that while football has the power to unite millions of people across cultures and borders, the sport continues to face the challenge of confronting racism whenever it appears.

As the World Cup continues, many hope the focus will return to the football itself—but the call for respect, equality and accountability has become impossible to ignore.
