PhD Studentship – Aspirational Computing Lab, University of Cambridge (Starting February 2026)
The Department of Computer Science and Technology (CST) at the University of Cambridge is offering a doctoral studentship beginning February 2026 in the forthcoming Aspirational Computing Lab.
This PhD programme will launch a research project on “deceptive by design” technologies, bridging human–computer interaction (HCI) and critical computing.
Research Themes
Candidates may explore one or more of the following areas:

Social identity cues in the design of LLM-based chatbots and social robots
-
Trust and reliance on conversational agents designed to appear charming or disarming
-
Dark patterns and manipulative tactics in user interface design
-
Voice and vocal cues that subtly influence user behaviour
-
Broader critical computing topics, including:

Diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI)

Misinformation and information deception
-
Training & Responsibilities

First 6 months: Work closely with Dr. Seaborn and senior researchers, gaining training in the re
search topic and relevant methodologies -
Second half of year: Transition into a leading research role and begin conducting original doctoral research

Opportunities to collaborate on additional projects within CST and beyond

Active participation in research communication, outreach, and lab activities

Training in small-group teaching and opportunities to provide undergraduate supervisions
