3-Year PhD Fellowship – NTNU (Norway) | ERC Horizon Europe Project: BLOCKADE
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD position linked to the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) / Horizon Europe project “BLOCKADE: The Hidden Weapon. Blockade in the Era of the Two Worlds.”
This international research project explores the impact and legacy of naval and economic blockades during and after both World Wars, in collaboration with the University of Freiburg, University of Amsterdam, and University of Hamburg. The ultimate goal of this fellowship is the completion of a doctoral degree while contributing to cutting-edge historical and social research.
Research Focus: Living Standards
The selected PhD candidate will focus on the Living Standards work package, investigating how blockade-induced shortages influenced:
-
Household living conditions during wartime
-
Social and economic resilience in both belligerent and neutral/occupied countries
Research may concentrate on:
-
One major blockaded power (e.g., Germany or Austria-Hungary)
-
One neutral or occupied country (e.g., Norway, Poland, or Belgium)
-
Either the First World War or the Second World War
Candidates will be expected to:
-
Develop new indicators for measuring wartime living standards (since traditional measures are unsuitable)
-
Distinguish blockade effects from broader wartime factors
-
Analyze published and unpublished quantitative data, diaries, newspapers, government archives, and municipal records
Flexibility in Approach
The PhD candidate is encouraged to design their own research approach—for example, by focusing on specific goods typically consumed by households. This work will contribute to broader themes within the BLOCKADE project, including:
-
The relationship between blockades, violence, and care
-
The role of blockades in shaping demographic developments and humanitarian responses
-
The evolution of humanitarian law and modern international practices
Collaboration & Supervision
-
The PhD will join a multinational research team across the four partner universities
-
Collaboration will focus on building a comprehensive source base for BLOCKADE
-
The candidate will work closely with Dr. Jonas Scherner (project leader, Trondheim team) and report to the Head of Department
📌 This fellowship offers a rare opportunity to conduct groundbreaking PhD research in history, economics, and social sciences within a leading European research consortium, while developing an independent research profile.
