The Humble OKRA (OKRO) and it's Benefits

Mpaa, okra, bitterleaves and jamajama are the main vegetables with which the 'fufu eating tribes' of the grassroots region in Cameroon use to consume cornmeal. For many, a combination of either one or the other constitutes their staple meal. Whilst growing up in Cameroon,, fufu and okra appeared every week on our plates. The kids who have grown in my hands have enjoyed eating fufu and okra. Recently, I was reading about the health benefits of OKRA and to my pleasant surprise, they were great advantages in consuming this rather humble vegetable.

Okra first originated in Egypt around the 12th century and has been used in several ways for food consumption.

Its health benefits include:

Kidney-Okra was shown to yield positive results on those suffering from kidney problems as they experienced a reduction in uric acid, and urine protein.

Liver-okra has a great anti-oxidant level, and helps to protect against chemically induced liver damage.

diabetes-okra extracts can protect against diabetes through a decrease in the blood sugar level.

Cancer-induces cell death in human breast cancer as okra contains lectin (for more info visit)

According to some online views, Okra can actually help to fight depression and help lift moods.

With all its benefits, maybe, its about time I start growing some OKRA. I think I love it with a pepper floating on the top of the soup together with some fufu-delicious!!!
