PhD studentship Journalism and Democracy
The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre for Wales (Wales DTC) invites applications to ONE fully-funded PhD studentship for the 2015/16 academic year on the ESRC DTC’s newest pathway, ‘Journalism and Democracy.’
The awards are available on either a 1+3 or +3 basis. A 1+3 studentship provides funding for four years, completing the MSc in Social Science Research Methods offered by the Cardiff School of Social Sciences (SOCSI) adapted to the needs of Journalism Studies students in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding for a PhD. A +3 studentship provides funding for the three years research study in Journalism Studies only. Studentships will commence in October 2015 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant (set at £14,057 p.a. for 2015/16); the award includes an additional Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of £500 per year for three years for full-time students.
These studentships are ‘open’ awards therefore the School welcomes proposals in a wide range of areas, however applicants should consider approaching a potential supervisor before submitting their application to confirm that there is supervisory capacity within the School and to discuss their draft application. Full awards (fees, maintenance) are open to UK Nationals and to EU students who satisfy UK residency requirements (minimum 3 years). EU Nationals who don’t meet this requirement are eligible for fees only, provided they have been resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to their PhD start date.
Minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree, Master's degree with at least Merit (for +3 studentship).
Preference given to candidates with degrees in journalism, media, cultural studies, communication, politics, social sciences.
