To Consume or Not to Consume Red Palm Oil? Find Out!
And so here I am trapped in the world's web sourcing information on palm oil, and its health repercussions. The commonality in most sources (see listed below) is that the over-consumption of palm oils can lead to inflammation in humans. This triggers a rush of thoughts in my brain interrogating what else shall we consume if palm oil is that bad. It is the primary oil used in many of the foods cooked in Africa. Well, it turns out coconut oil is good.(Will expand on this in another post).
I am not done with this palm oil issue until I understand one positive value of palm oil. I think I wanted to feed my eagerness to comprehend whether or not what I have been consuming from birth is a potential health hazard. Then I stumble on Dr. Oz's account which expands on why we should give palm oil a try. Dr. Oz explains that Red palm fruit oil which should not be confused with palm kernel oil is a great antioxidant. However, some food nutritionists have treated red palm oil fruit as palm kernel oil. This confusion has culminated to undermining the benefits of red palm fruit oil. It is worthy to mention that red palm fruit oil is in fact valuable in that the red color of the palm fruit oil is attributed to its high content of carotenes. Carotenes are super-great anti-oxidants as found in carrots and tomatoes. The surprising beauty of this all is that red palm fruit oil contains more than tomatoes or carrots.
So don't miss out on your favourite mbanga soup, roasted palm fruit, and whatever you do with red palm fruit. Like with anything else, its over-consumption could be risky.
