The Optimist-6

They’ve witnessed a live entertainment show; no rubies and cowries spent. Who goes to a cinema with all these daily theatrical encounters?

That’s a good point; these people are all ‘mental’. Responded Nahou.

“Yes Nahou, they’ve just watched a display of concealed madness compared to Ninong’s, but it doesn't occur to them that Mr Muscle man’s fury and anger against his wife is a display of madness that’s been ticked as normal by society. While Mr. Muscle man can go ahead with battering his wife, Ninong who does not inflict any pain on people is being chained because people say he walks around a lot. They want to constrain his movements, but do not want to constrain humans being hurting each other. Humans fight in order to showcase their power, they fight to suppress, to create masters from the powerful and slaves from the weak. They fight to conquer and in all these battles, their madness are validated.”

The sun’s rays were now beginning to appear less bright, and the skies were now shady red; the sun was in a goodbye day state. Nahou and The Optimist headed to grandma’s house. They passed by the public tap where children were carrying buckets of water; some were fighting, others watching, and others encouraging the fight.

“You see when I say people are all ‘mental’ right down to the kids. This sort of barbarism that exists among children perpetuated by children is a synonymous behavior possibly copied from adults. No doubt humans say “charity begins at home.” But this charity which begins at home is the very attitude that makes you fight each other. In that you’ll have inclinations/warmth for those from home, and bitterness/indifference for those who are not from home. And as such those who are from home are always trying to out-beat those who are not from home. ” It doesn't just end there. Those who are from home, make attempts to appear better by engaging in either one struggle of power or the other."

Nahou and The Optimist walked past the children and got to the big compound. Some kids had already washed their feet and faces already prepared for bed as it was now almost dark.  They stood outside grandpa’s house watching the single television in the entire compound. Grandpa was on a big chair snoozing and the kids were not allowed to sit in with grandpa who was a title-holder. Whilst he had the entire inner space, the kids were outside fighting on where to stand and watch better. They were murmuring phrases like 'this is my place' 'don't step on my toes' 'shift' 'I beg I fit stand?' They kept their tones low because they didn't want Grandpa to send them away for disturbing him.

Nahou who had not seen Grandpa the entire day had to fulfill his daily obligation of seeing him. Moreover it was thoughtful to go find out how grandpa was faring.

“ba u tchie?” (are you there, grandpa?)Asked Nahou.

Grandpa was still sleeping…Nahou cleared his throat and rubbed his feet against the floor making so much noise that woke grandpa up.

“ahhhhhh Nahouuu! Is it you? Where have you been, boy? Asked Grandpa
“Haaaaaa bbbbbbaaaaaa (stammered Nahou) when will you stop calling me a boy? I am now a man! I have been around town trying to figure out things.”

“Your mates are busy helping on the farm. You are here having a walk and trying to figure things out. You’ve got to man up, put your coat on and start working. For men work and boys talk! replied grandpa
